I made an appointment and traveled to Toronto to order a stone for my uncle Jim who died in 1952. It was suggested that I contact Veterans Canada as he was a veteran. It is possible that the government will pay for the stone! So I decided to purchase a stone for my great grandmother Eliza J. Cramer. Eliza was born in 1865 in England and came to Canada in 1903 with her husband Thomas and 3 children. (Three more children were born in Toronto before she died in 1910).
I was quite taken aback when the sales person asked me why was I bothering to spend the money. After all she has been dead since 1910. Most sales people don't discourage a sale. It only took a minute to gather my senses. I explained to him that family is family! Just because Eliza is dead does not mean that she should be forgotten. I asked him if he wanted to be remembered by his future family. He said he didn't care since he would be gone anyway. What a sad statement. I believe we are all here today because we all have roots. A family we came from. I want to remember mine while I wait to meet them in heaven!
(I am waiting for the stone to be carved and will add a picture of it at a later time).
