On October 3, 1651, Henry Stiles of Windsor was shot by Thomas Allyn, also of Windsor during a militia exercise. Mr. Stiles was a boarder in the house of Thomas and Lydia Gilbert. Thomas Allyn was found guilty of murder and paid a 20 pound fine. Three years later Thomas' fine was reversed and Lydia Gilbert was charged with causing the death of Henry by witchcraft! No explanation as to why Thomas's conviction was overturned or why Lydia was accused of witchcraft was recorded. The jury found her guilty on November 28th, 1654!
Halloween is when we think about witches. When I think of witches I think of poor Lydia. To see the above document, "Observations...Witchcrafts, in a Dialogue" go to Connecticut history.org.
