Great-grandfather Hugh arrived in Canada on the vessel Circassian on June 5, 1881. Unfortunately he only stated that he came from Ireland. Irish research can be complicated and more detail is needed. It has taken me ten years to confirm that Hugh Mahon had a brother William born in Scotstown, Monaghan, Ireland. This gave me a confirmation that Hugh and William's father was also Hugh who married Jane Carr.
Ancestry.com and Familysearch.org have been great places to research. Ancestry's Family Tree pages lead me to someone I did not know existed, Jane C. Jane shared with me many family facts via email. I recently I had the pleasure of meeting Jane at Tim Horton's. Jane's grandmother is Jane (she preferred to be called Jennie) Mahon (pronounced Ma Hon) who is the daughter of William. My grandmother, Martha Louisa Mahon is the daughter of Hugh. Both ladies were born in Toronto. Jane gave me pictures of Jane Mahon and there is a family resemblance between Jane and Martha!
Thanks Jane for sharing your family history.
Here is Jane and I at the Tim Horton's.
On Familysearch.org I found an index for a marriage certificate for Hugh Mahon and Jane Carr. I will be faxing my request for a copy of the marriage certificate to the Civil Registration Office in Roscommon, Ireland. This will confirm their marriage and hopefully give me their father's names. This would allow me to go back another generation!
